1. Check the Card’s Design

A REAL ID has a unique design and color scheme compared to other driver’s licenses or IDs. Look for a distinctive layout and color pattern that sets it apart from other cards. This can be a good initial check to see if your card is a genuine REAL ID.

2. Verify the State’s REAL ID Logo

Each state has its own logo, which is usually located on the bottom left or right corner of the card. Check if the logo matches the one used by your state’s DMV or equivalent agency. This logo is an important indicator that your card is a genuine REAL ID.

3. Inspect for Advanced Security Features

REAL IDs have advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting and tampering. Look for holograms, watermarks, microprinting (tiny text that can only be read under magnification), and UV printing (glows under ultraviolet light). These features are designed to make it difficult for counterfeiters to replicate the card’s appearance.

4. Check Your Name and Photo (and Expiration Date)

Make sure the name and photo on the ID match you exactly. Additionally, check that the card has a 10-year expiration date, while other driver’s licenses may expire after 4-6 years. A mismatched name or incorrect expiration date can be an indication that your card is not a genuine REAL ID.
