A Gmax Pokemon is a special kind of Pokémon that completely changes its appearance when they Dynamax in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Once the Pokémon is a Gigantamax, it has its own unique G-max move that can be used in a battle. Pokémon with the Giganta Max factor are very rare, and they have specific locations where they can appear. In addition, there are specific Pokémon that have the ability to Gigantamax, so you will want to know if you have one or not. Read on to learn how to tell if a Pokémon is Gmax.

Look at its Summary

The easiest way to find out if your Pokemon is Gmax is to check the summary. Every single Pokemon has its own entry in the Pokedex, so you can check the entry to find out if any Pokémon has this ability. When you look along the top of the entry, you will see a black shaded area. The Pokeball it lives in is to the left of its name. If the Pokémon is able Gmax, there will be a red X between the Pokeball and the name.

Know Where You Caught it

You will receive a Dynamax from Professor Magnolia in the beginning of the game, which will allow you to trigger Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon. There are certain ways to obtain Pokémon that are capable of Gigantamaxing, and if you didn’t get your Pokémon in one of these ways, it definitely cannot Gmax. You can obtain Gigantamax Pokémon through mystery gifts and special events. You can also get them from Max Raid Battles. None of the Pokémon you obtain in the overworld are capable of Gintamaxing.

The easiest way to get a Gigantamax Pokémon is by battling and catching them in Max Raid Battles with up to three other players. You can activate these types of raids by using a wishing piece on one of the Pokémon dens in the Wild Area. There is a 5% chance of a Pokémon appearing, and certain Pokémon appear in certain spots. If one appears, make sure that you battle it to reduce its health to zero so that you can catch it.

Make Sure it Is a Pokémon That Has the Capability

Gigantamax Pokémon are superior to Dynamax Pokémon, and they are more rare. They are larger and have a bit of a different look. They also have the exclusive G-Max moves, which are the most powerful attacks in Pokémon Sword and Shield. They limit the Pokémon that are capable of Gigantamaxing, so yours will need to be one of the following:

  • Charizard
  • Pikachu
  • Eevee
  • Butterfree
  • Meowth
  • Corvilknight
  • Alcremie
  • Drednaw
  • Gengar
  • Sandaconda
  • Centiskorch
  • Machamp
  • Coalossal
  • Grimmsnarl
  • Duraludon
  • Hatterene
  • Copperajah
  • Appletun
  • Flapple
  • Orbeetle
  • Kingler
  • Lapras
  • Garbodor

The thing to remember is that if you have any of these Pokémon, there is no guarantee that it is a Gmax. You need to check its summary to find out. Look for the red X, which is the Gigantamax icon.

Gigantamax is a great feature to add an extra element of fun to Pokémon Sword and Shield. If you are able to encounter and catch one, this is useful in battles. These Pokémon are stronger and have special moves that help them defeat other Pokémon in battles. When you use a Gigantamax on one of your Pokémon, it stays in its form for three turns. During this time, you need to overpower your opponent using your Max moves. After this time, it will return back to its normal state.

If you enjoy playing Pokémon Sword and Shield, you will want to know how to Gmax, and you will likely spend time hunting for these special Pokémon. They will help you win more Max Raid Battles, and they are powerful temporary evolutions. They help you gain an advantage in battles, so you need to know how to identify which ones you have.
