Dual monitors can be particularly useful for artists and computer programmers, as well as those who work in analytics or customer service. Here’s how to tell if your computer can support two monitors.

Look at your graphics card

A computer processor typically has an integrated graphics capability, although the capacity and strength of this will depend on the particular model. Some users opt for a separate graphics card that they can use for dual monitor displays or higher quality visuals for video or PC games. If your computer system has a graphics processing unit, then you probably don’t need to purchase a separate graphics card.

Check the motherboard

Your computer’s motherboard is the primary circuit board that bridges the communications between the computer systems, the CPU, the memory storage, and more. The motherboard is typically found in the bottom part of the computer, although it does depend on the model.

Once you locate your computer’s motherboard, check to see if it has multiple outputs for VGA (Video Graphics Array) or HDMI cables. If so, then it can support a dual monitor display.

Ask the internet to see if others have dual setup

When in doubt, do a quick Google search. We’re not all computer geniuses, so try looking up your computer’s motherboard model number to see what it can support. Micro Star International’s website is a good resource for learning what functions your computer system can support. They also give recommendations for where to buy specific products such as new motherboards and graphics cards.

It’s not a matter of can, it’s a matter of will

Pretty much all computers can support a dual monitor display. It’s more about figuring out if you need an additional graphics card to make that happen. Use these tips to find out and if that doesn’t help, there are resources such as Geek Squad at your local Best Buy store.
